I'm really hoping to have that done tonight so that I can finish up the HP blanket my New Years when I visit my SIL.
Since starting this Harry Potter CAL, I have been inspired to come up with my own squares in this fashion. I started off with the Pokemon squares & those turned out pretty well. I have now created squares for all 12 doctors from Doctor Who! Interested in what they look like? Well, join the Block a Month (BAM) CAL I will be hosting in 2016. Head on over to Facebook and join Doctor Who Faces Block a Month CAL 2016. This will start in January with the first doctor. Each month I will release the graph for the next doctor. I will also post video tutorials for how to do both the bobble and c2c stitches so that you can find your perfect method to make this afghan. I can't wait to start and hope you will join me.Shatanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10107659496790954479noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8862512750927111418.post-74430309543529969962015-12-11T20:14:00.003-06:002015-12-24T18:05:09.518-06:00So much more Pokemon!I finally finished working on the Pokeball! This will be the backside of the Pikachu pillow. Just need to single crochet them together & get the pillow form put in. I was super excited to see that Joann Fabric had them on sale for 40% off this week. That's one gift down.

Over in the Crafty Ridge world, the pattern for Snape was released for the HP CAL. As soon as the last 2 squares are completed, I plan on making a celebration post with the whole afghan completed. I absolutely love how this is coming out.

In other news, I went yarn shopping today for the CAL I'm going to be starting in January hosted by the amazing Totallee! Y'all just have to check out her work on Ravelry. I still have a few more colors to decide on, but I should have that all sorted out in the next day or so. Progress pics once it starts, but keeping the pattern a secret for now.

Now that Pikachu is finished, I have come up with 2 more Pokemon characters for my niece's present. I couldn't decide between Squirtle and Charmander, so I made up graphs for both of them. Maybe the pillow will just have both characters and not the pokeball like my nephews pillow.
And doing crazy things with bobble stitch and graphs.Ok, so I got out of the blogging world for way too long. I moved from Illinois to South Carolina at the end of 2014, and I couldn't be happier with that decision. I live less than 30 minutes away from the beach and it stays warm most of the year. No snow, no shoveling, no scraping ice off the windshield....

So, what have I been up to? Well, crocheting and knitting mostly. When I'm not at work, at least. And sometimes there as well if it isn't too busy. Right now I am working on my sister-in-law's Christmas gift. I found this Potter Pillow over on Ravelry and at first was just going to make the pillow, but then found out that the designer was doing a whole HP CAL over on her website & Facebook page. Crafty Ridge Designs has the most amazing HP squares, so of course I had to change the gift to the afghan.

As I finished the first 6 squares, I realized that this could open up a whole world of graph / 8-bit nerdy designs for me! So here is my first attempt at my own square.

Pikachu!

My nephew & niece have recently gotten into Pokemon, so I have decided to make them some pillows for Christmas. Each will have the Pokeball on the back. So, go ahead & grab this pdf and make up your own. I should have the Pokeball done soon & will upload pics as soon as it is done, but here is the graph I'm working with, so grab the pdf for this one as well.

Materials:
-Worsted Weight Yarn in white, black, yellow & red. (I'm partial to Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn, but any worsted weight yarn will do)
-Hook appropriate to your yarn selection. This was done with an H/5.00 hook.
-Yarn needle
-Scissors
-16" pillow form if making a pillow

Need to know how to go about making this bobble stitch square? Check out some tips from Repeat Crafter Me! She has made an epic Seattle Seahawks blanket with this stitch.

I'm going to work on a couple more Pokemon characters, but feel free to make suggestions!
Too many, to be sure, but the craziest thing I have done lately was make my nephew Peyton a Super Mario Bro quilt for his birthday & managed to complete it in one month! I found this quilt-a-long on Cuttopieces. Let me begin by saying that I have, technically, made a quilt before. Three others, in fact. The first quilt I made was completely hand-stitched & the layers were tied with yarn. The second was machine stitched and the layers were tied with yarn. The third quilt was done before Christmas. It was a t-shirt quilt & was machine stitched & "quilted" by stitch-in-the-ditch method. I guess you could say I have been improving my technique as I went along. I had in my head a very distinct image of what I wanted this quilt to look like. The problem was that my sewing machine was very basic & didn't allow for free-motion quilting. My uncle found out from my mom that I was looking for a new machine that had quilting options & on Christmas day he said he still had my aunt's machine that had been just sitting all covered up since before she died a few years ago & did I want it. WHAT?! I was super excited. A week or so later, I have my new quilting/embroidery machine. I had already started piecing the quilt together.
The directions in the blog were excellent & although it was time consuming, it was enjoyable. I would sit for a couple hours listening to an audio book & putting all those tiny squares together. The top picture is the mushroom square all ready for sewing. You can see in the bottom picture the size difference between the sewn square (star) and the unsewn square (Mario). I had to spent quite a lot of time on square placement. Apparently I wasn't being as careful as I thought because not all the square were the same size. They were close, but not all of them were close enough. I managed to get it to work though. I knew my backing was going to be a twin size sheet so I didn't have to deal with lining up material for the back. I also used adjustable spray adhesive to get the back, batting, & top all put together into a sandwich.

Then it was time to figure out the new machine. I made a bunch of scrap quilt sandwiches together to work on tension. It took some time & to be honest I was starting to worry that it wasn't going to work out right. I did, after some internet searching, manage to find the right needle, thread, tension, etc & off I went. I can honestly say that this is by no means perfect. Tension was still a little off because of all the seams, but it was working for the most part.

I can not describe how excited I was for this to start working like the image in my head! I had never done this part before. There were a few times that I had to get up, walk away & take a deep breath. It seemed to take forever. Peyton's party was just a few days away! The Friday before the party I finally finished the quilting, added the border & put a tag in it. I love how the lime green border made the other colors pop!

Obviously, this present was not being kept a secret from his family, so by present opening time I think everyone was very excited to see the finished product. He, of course, had no clue, so we saved my present for last. I did manage to snap a picture of him doing the actual opening. In case you haven't guessed, his entire party was Mario themed.

And then there is the final result. He came up to me and gave me a big hug! The look on his face made all that time completely worth it.

My online store officially opens on Monday, September 19th! Just a few short days away. The school carnival where I will set up my first ever booth is on Friday, September 23rd. Going to be a busy week for me. My wonderful friend Jolean finished up my store logo and it is absolutely amazing!
Hopefully I'll be able to pass some out at the carnival and get in some extra orders this way. I still have 2 baby blankets to get done by the end of the year as well, so lots to do. Speaking of which, I need to get that hook a movin'.
Shatanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10107659496790954479noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8862512750927111418.post-32006960384022580902011-08-25T22:08:00.000-05:002011-08-25T22:08:43.793-05:00Busy, busy, busyI have been making hats like it's my job lately. And soon, it will be my second job. My etsy shop officially opens in 25 days! I have been making the hats for the booth at the school carnival on September 23rd. I'm currently at 28 hats, and I still need to make some sock monkey hats, as well as some size 5yr + hats. Guess I better get on those. I would really like to work on another project, but feel like it would be unwise to start something new until after the carnival. I kept checking every hour on the hour Monday and finally at 4 am the hint was up. I got the registration email a couple hours later and am all ready to go. I really hope I get that Welcome email. Yes, I'm totally a Harry Potter geek. I've even got the Pottermore website saved on my phone and toolbar.

In other news, I've finished up 2 more hats. The pig from Angry Birds and a Baby Blue Bird.
I have 8 weeks before I open my first booth to sell my hats. And, the first time Tanny's Toppers will be utilized. Pretty excited, but so much to do! I have two new hats that I've created for the booth. Angry Birds and Owls. Better get offline and get crocheting. I'm going to start on the pig from Angry Birds next.
We had a wonderful relaxing week. Leigh & I watched 2 Harry Potter movies a day while I knit up blankets on the knitting machine for her for baby blankets. She added borders & stitched the squares together. On Thursday night, we went to the theater & watched Harry Potter 7.1 and then the midnight premier of 7.2. I thought it was an excellent movie. I felt very satisfied at the ending & felt as though they did a great job of concluding the past 10 years of everyone's lives through the plot. On Friday I started a cupcake hat for my friend Becca's daughter Olivia who was having her 1st birthday party on Saturday. It turned out really cute.
Saturday I drove back home & dropped off the birthday cake for Olivia that Leigh, my sister-in-law made for her. Ended up going to the birthday party & playing dominoes with everyone. Had a great time. Sunday was church, switching back my car with my bro-in-law, then not doing much of anything. It was pretty nice. Monday I signed up for an Etsy store. I'm not putting anything in it until just before the school carnival I'm making hats & earwarmers for. That way I can pass out business cards for people who want to check out my stuff. Hopefully it turns out well. I really need to spend my last day off straitening up the apartment. my suitcase from last week is still in the living room! Lol, I obviously need to get laundry done, but need to get cash for that, so it will have to wait until tomorrow.Shatanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10107659496790954479noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8862512750927111418.post-58276935749842457652011-07-03T21:45:00.000-05:002011-07-03T21:45:49.725-05:00TiredI'm so tired of having migraines. It really makes it hard to knit, crochet, or read. However, I'm working on a cupcake hat that needs to be finished by next Sunday so I got some of that done. It is, however, getting near time for me to turn in for the evening since tomorrow is the 4th of July, my favorite holiday. I just downloaded 3 books to the Kindle, so I'm going to read for a little bit before bed, but I better take Maddy out for her walk before she gets a little too antsy. Hopefully tomorrow won't include headaches.Shatanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10107659496790954479noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8862512750927111418.post-32601575367871559752011-06-28T01:52:00.001-05:002011-06-28T01:52:01.204-05:00Mario pillow back side complete

Finally finished the back side of the Mario pillow. It's getting blocked at the moment, but hoping to get the border on both sides and finish it up over the next couple days. Alex's birthday is next Wednesday so I'm still doing good on time.

I'm totally geeked about the last HP movie!!!! I think my sister-in-law and I will have to have a serious HP movie marathon before catching the midnight showing of the movie. Why can't they show it now?????? Guess I'll just have to stick to the count down clock.
My gauge wasn't working for the Bowser scene, and just a castle seemed kind of boring, so I came up with Mario sliding down the flag pole with a portion of the original castle design & some fireworks.

I've actually already tweaked his nose & cap a bit. They both just really seemed to be sticking out really far. I also decided that Alex was going to need a blanket. I've made all my nieces and nephews one, so I can't leave him out. His blanket is going to be the Mario from the front of the pillow. Each of the squares from that design will be small granny square. Only doing the Mario though. Haven't decided on a background color yet, but I'll worry about that a little later. I have about 680 squares to make for the blanket, so may as well get started making the colors I already know I need. This is going to measure approximately 4' x 5' before the border. Should look pretty good on his bed.Shatanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10107659496790954479noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8862512750927111418.post-42436459022533665232011-06-13T22:11:00.001-05:002011-06-13T22:11:59.819-05:00More Mario - Front side

Finally finished the front side of the Mario pillow. It was slightly taller than I was expecting, but that's ok. Now I just need to design the back. Alex loves doing the castle levels, so I'm debating between doing a Bowser scene and just putting the exterior castle image on it. Maybe I'll make up both and see which one the parents think he'll like better.

I was going to the Cubs Cards game in St. Louis with some people from church & had to be at the church at 10:45. I was actually on time even though I had to run up to JoAnn fabrics to grab another skein of yarn. I rode with Bruce & Karen Weir, Amy Lee, and Don Blumenshine. I don't know any of these people except by sight. I sat in the back & crocheted during the ride up & managed to finish up my niece's blanket for her 4th birthday.
I was razzed a bit by some of the other church members for my Cubs gear. Hey, I'm from Illinois, I cheer for Chicago. What can I say, it's easy to root for the underdog if you always cheer for Chicago. It was 95 degrees out, but at least we were in the shade. I wouldn't have made it if we had to sit in the sun. Cardinals got a 2 run homer in the bottom of the 5th, but then Pena of the Cubs got a 2 run homer in the top of the 6th & they scored 2 more runs. Went into extra innings. By the bottom of the 12th inning I was praying anyone would score because I was so hot, tired, thirsty, and hungry. Pujols of the Cards was first up to bat & hit a homer over the center field wall. I'm still not sure why Kerry Wood decided to pitch to him instead of walk him, but that's the Cubs mentality. Here's a pic of the Arch from my seat in the stadium.
The ride home was uneventful. We got back to the church at 10 pm. I had told my friend Jolean that if we got back in time I would watch her boys so she & her husband Mike could go see X-Men: First Class. I sent her a text & she said they would still like to go. So, ran home, let Maddy out, grabbed the Veronica Mars Season 1 dvd I've been watching & headed over. Boys were obviously already in bed when I got there at 11. I just watched my dvds until they returned around 2:45 am. I got some homemade apple banana nut bread out of the deal too. Made it home, but had a massive headache. Didn't get to bed until nearly 4. It was a very long day, but glad I got to see a Cubs Cards game in person. Maybe I'll have to go again, but this time at Wrigley Field.Shatanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10107659496790954479noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8862512750927111418.post-21075998749114380192011-06-01T22:21:00.000-05:002011-06-01T22:24:46.113-05:00Nothing too excitingToday wasn't overly exciting, but I got some things accomplished today. I didn't get to sleep until 5 am and woke up around 9 because I was hot. I'm still not sure why I had decided to turn the a/c off knowing that the sun shines in my window in the morning. Met Mom, Chloe & Conner (niece & nephew of my oldest sister Christa) for lunch at Ernie's Family Restaurant in Pekin. After we ate, we went back to Mom's house where Chloe promptly popped in the High School Musical 3 DVD. Oy vey. What poor acting. I thought the first movie was ok, the 2nd was worse, and I was very glad I had to leave during the middle of the 3rd. Yikes! But, Chloe is 10 and thinks it's great, so there you have it. I got home around 2 and my friend Jolean came over with her boys Alex & Zach. I'm going to be watching Zach while she takes Alex to speech therapy on the Wednesday's I don't work during the summer. The little man was pretty good. Got a bit fussy, but promptly fell asleep after I stood up and rocked him. Over all, not too bad for an hour and a half. Once Jolean & Alex got back, we talked while Alex played Super Mario Bros for the Wii. He loves Mario! We then met Jolean's husband Mike for dinner at Carlos O'Kelley's. I've only been there a couple times, but the food was good. Mike took the boys home after that while Jolean & I stopped at Dollar Tree before knitting group. I picked up a couple new Sudoku and Word Search books (one of which is Tinkerbell so I'm stoked about that). We had a new girl come to knitting tonight. Her name is Jenny & she was very nice. I hope she comes back next week. I really love knitting group. Although, Melinda & Erin's talk about running makes me want to give it a go. I, unfortunately, happen to be a fat kid at the moment & even the thought of running gives me an asthma attack. I may have to start by taking my 9 yr old dog Maddy on longer evening walks because let's be honest, no one needs to see this thing run. I really do need to get in to a shape other than round. Just not even remotely motivated at the moment. All my excuses of new computer build at work, new dog, winter, & move have all evaporated. Time to find some motivation. But until said time, I need to watch the first season of Veronica Mars that Jolean loaned me while I try to finish up the last 5 squares of Lilly's blanket. Tomorrow is work then going to see the midnight showing of X-Men: First Class!Shatanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10107659496790954479noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8862512750927111418.post-10989503400249565742011-06-01T00:47:00.000-05:002011-06-01T00:47:47.333-05:00New to the blogging world....well, almostSo, this is my first attempt at blogging that will hopefully not get me in trouble at work. My last attempt was a couple years ago via Myspace and, well, let's just say it didn't end well. I ended up completely deleting my page which was fine since I don't miss it. I think I'm going to avoid issues this time around by not giving my blog address to people I work with. I'm also going to attempt to not rant about work on here, but I make no promises.

I should be spending my time at home working on my latest (and greatest?) knitting or crochet project. I've got too many projects at the moment though. I'm almost finished with my niece Lilly's blanket for her 4th birthday present. Her birthday isn't until August so I have plenty of time for that.

I also just started a Mario pillow for my friend's son Alex who will be 5 in July. He's a huge Mario fan. I really should keep up on that one since I don't have a ton of time & I'm doing it Tunisian stitch. Here is the front design I made on Excel. Still gotta work on the back design. Not sure what I'm going to put there, but he always likes watching his mom go through the castles at the end of each level, so maybe Bowser and some fireballs. I'll keep posting as I go.
